Weekly Avalanche Workshops are Back @MTOUTDOORS

A New “Weekly Avalanche Workshop” will be running this winter in Wanaka to help promote avalanche safety.

The Mountain Safety Council has developed an informal setting giving Backcountry Users the opportunity to get questions answered by top Avalanche Professionals on a weekly basis. Kindly supported and hosted at “MT Outdoor’s” Store on Dunmore St. Free admission!

Each week will feature:

  • A wrap up of current Weather, Snowpack, and Avalanche conditions from the www.avalanche.net.nz
  • a short presentation/led discussion on the themed topic for the evening
  • a question and answer session.

It is hoped that the regular and relaxed format will build a community of Backcountry users where people can:

  • Participate in a less intimidating setting compared to the big one-off Seminar (many regions currently run)
  • Be referred onto Courses
  • Share their experience or team up with others that have more experience
  • Share rides/split costs – more sustainable
  • Promote the exchange/reporting of information

The evenings will be held on a Friday night, starting August 19th from 7pm to 8pm.

This we hope to best catch the weekend visitors. Guest speakers will be leading avalanche professionals from local Ski Patrols and Guiding Companies, many of whom will be teaching on the MSC Avalanche courses.

These evenings will have a guest speaker covering a short presentation or theme for the evening. Get people together, meet other backcountry users, then have a led discussion (talk) on the themed topic of the evening.(eg Compression tests, terrain traps, or a snow drainage that has common usage). The workshops should act as a referral towards getting people on courses, are less intimidating for people to interact compared to the big one off Seminar (many regions currently run), people can meet others to share rides(splitting costs, and is more sustainable), buy and sell of gear, etc

Who is it for?

Anyone interested in learning about Avalanche Awareness. To get those who share the same activities to share their experiences, and build a Community where they can learn off each other, and ideally from more experienced users. Learning by doing/participation/interaction.

Dr Steve (Podiatrist)

The boot fitting team at Mt Outdoors includes one qualified podiatrist and two master boot fitters who have an intimate knowledge of the biomechanics, anatomy and physiology of your feet. Throughout the 2011 winter season our team will be fitting a range of Black Diamond, Lange, Garmont and Atomic ski boots.  We will also offer a full complement of boot fitting services including: Custom footbeds, boot stretching, liner modification, footwarmer installation and heat moulding.

Boot fitting talk by Dr Steve (Podiatrist):

I am constantly amazed by the number of skiers and boarders that put up with foot and leg pain simply because they have no idea help is out there.  Boots are the most important piece of equipment to get right when buying your gear.  A custom fit pair of boots can be the difference between a holiday spent shredding powder everyday in comfort to one spent in the cafe crippled by injury. Frequently people question me about the expense of buying a new pair of ski boots, while I admit they are not exactly cheap, my reply is usually how much is all day comfort and performance worth? In relation to the other expenses sustained during a ski holiday a pair of boots is a onetime investment that may be enjoyed for many seasons to come. At Mt Outdoors we take an experienced and well-educated approach to provide the best boot fitting solutions for our valued customers.
